Here is an event-by-event breakdown of what to look for in the girls track events Friday and Saturday at the 99th CIF State Championships:

100-meter dash

Favorite: De’Anna Nowling, Calabasas. The sophomore is the top returning finisher after placing fourth last year, with all three individuals in front of her having either graduated or concluded the season with injury. She enters the meet having won her past five 100 races, including a May 5 wind-aided 11.44 at the Marmonte League finals.

Other contenders: Jasmin Reed, Serra; Ariyonna Augustine, Long Beach Poly. Both finalists from last year return – along with Carson senior Kenyla Miles – and are capable of winning the title in a balanced field.

Sleeper: Aaliyah Wilson, Bakersfield Stockdale. After finishing 20th in last year’s prelims, the junior has emerged as one of the most improved athletes in the state. Wilson ran a wind-aided 11.67 to win the Central Section Masters title May 20 on the same track.

200 Meters

Favorite: Kaelin Roberts, Carson. The senior already has a pair of state 400 titles on her resume, but following a 23.53 at the L.A. City Section finals, Roberts could add a 200 championship as well. Following an injury to Lauren Rain Williams at last year’s meet, Roberts placed second behind St. Bonaventure’s Celera Barnes.

Other contenders: Jasmin Reed, Serra; Ariyonna Augustine, Long Beach Poly; De’Anna Nowling, Calabasas. Augustine and Reed both return from last year’s championship race, with Nowling qualifying in a second individual event after only advancing last season in the 100. Reed ran a state-leading 23.39 in March, but has only been under 23.60 twice since.

Sleeper: Jalyn Harris, Rancho Cucamonga. The CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion ran a personal-best 23.47 to win the title May 20 and is one of the most improved competitors in the state in the event after not breaking 24 seconds before this year.

400 Meters

Favorite: Shae Anderson, Norco. When she ran 51.99 at the Mt. SAC Relays in April, Anderson became the No. 6 performer in state history and ran the fastest time by a California athlete since the state record of 50.74 by Monique Henderson of San Diego Morse in 2000. With Kaelin Roberts seeking her third career title, it could take another sub-52 effort by Anderson to win her first championship.

Other contenders: Kaelin Roberts, Carson; Alexis Surrell, Newark Memorial. Roberts has won two of the past three titles with a personal-best 52.28 and despite losing to Anderson at the Mt. SAC Relays in April, will be ready to contend for another championship. Surrell just missed advancing to the final after placing 10th in last year’s prelims, but has run 54.10 this season and enters the meet with plenty of momentum.

Sleeper: Maliyah Medley, El Toro. After finishing third as a sophomore last year, running under 54 seconds twice including the state final, it will take the best performance of her career to knock off Anderson and Roberts. But she finished second at the CIF Southern Section Masters meet and has demonstrated her ability to peak in the postseason.

800 Meters

Favorite: Alyssa Brewer, California. Her winning time of 2:06.86 from last year’s state final ranks just outside the top 20 in California history, but if Brewer can break 2:06 for the first time, she would elevate into the top dozen all-time in the state. Brewer is looking to become the ninth athlete to repeat as state champion.

Other contenders: Jacquelyn Hill, Etiwanda; Erica Schroeder, San Marcos; Cathilyn McIntosh, Del Oro. All three individuals return from last year’s final, including the runner-up McIntosh, who ran 2:07.98. Schroeder won the 2015 title, but placed eighth last year and Hill has enjoyed a resurgence in the past month, winning the CIF Southern Section Masters title in 2:09.09.

Sleeper: Mari Friedman, Santa Cruz. The junior placed third at the 50th Arcadia Invitational in 2:09.56 and has valuable experience after placing 11th in last year’s state final.

1,600 Meters

Favorite: Rylee Bowen, Sonoma Academy. After finishing fourth last year and running a pair of 4:48 miles during the season, along with a 4:51.42 1,600 at the CIF North Coast Section Meet of Champions, Bowen has the potential to add another state title to Division 5 cross country victories during her freshman and sophomore years.

Other contenders: Maddy Denner, Oak Ridge; Annie Boos, Claremont; Haley Herberg, Capistrano Valley. All three individuals have 1,600 times under 4:50, with Boos returning after placing seventh at last year’s final and trading victories with Herberg at the CIF Southern Section Division 2 finals and Masters meet. Denner won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters title.

Sleeper: Olivia O’Keeffe, Davis Senior. The junior is the top returnee after placing third last year in 4:48.66. O’Keeffe battled injuries during the regular season, but shouldn’t be overlooked after winning the Division 1 state cross country title in November.

3,200 Meters

Favorite: Claudia Lane, Malibu. The Foot Locker national cross country champion boasts the fastest time in the country at 9:57.52, which ranks No. 6 in state history. The next big target for Lane would be the 2008 state meet record of 9:52.13 set by Jordan Hasay of Mission Prep.

Other contenders: Elena Denner, Oak Ridge; Maddy Denner, Oak Ridge; Alexandra Beitia, Granite Bay. The top three finishers from the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters have all run 10:21 or faster – along with Oak Park sophomore Sylvia Cruz-Albrecht – and won’t be intimidated by a fast pace from Lane.

Sleeper: Corie Smith, Buchanan. The state’s top freshman will be running on her home track and demonstrated she is capable of thriving in the spotlight after placing fourth in the Division 1 state cross country final in November and running 10:28 in the 3,200 at the 50th Arcadia Invitational in April.

100-meter hurdles

Favorite: Tara Davis, Agoura. She already has state records with her wind-legal 13.01 and wind-aided 12.89, but Davis will be pursuing the state meet record of 13.03 by Mt. Pleasant’s Vashti Thomas in 2007. She is looking to become the first athlete since Sasha Wallace of both Holy Names and Castro Valley in 2012-13 to repeat and the 10th in state history.

Other contenders: Kaylah Robinson, El Cerrito; Jurnee Woodward, Vacaville. Robinson and Woodward were second and third behind Davis’ 13.38 winning effort last year, but it will take the perfect race from either competitor in order to knock off the reigning champion.

Sleeper: Aaliyah Wilson, Bakersfield Stockdale. It will take a significant effort to break up the top three, but Wilson is the fastest hurdler in Central Section history at 13.72 and could be an early favorite for next year’s title.

300-meter hurdles

Favorite: Jurnee Woodward, Vacaville. Woodward has been in career pursuit of the state record of 39.98 set in 2001 by Long Beach Wilson’s Lashinda Demus, but will first have to get past Norco senior Shae Anderson, who ran the No. 5 time in state history with her 40.41 at the Arcadia Invitational. Woodward ranks ninth all-time in the state with her 40.62 to win last season’s championship, but it will likely take a personal best from either runner to secure this year’s crown.

Other contenders: Shae Anderson, Norco; Breanna Bernard-Joseph, Roosevelt. Anderson and Woodward both have the potential to break the state meet record of 40.10 set in 2005 by Long Beach Wilson’s Ebony Collins. Bernard-Joseph took second last year to Woodward and has run 41.87 in her career.

Sleeper: Shante Robinson, Mira Costa. She placed fourth at last year’s final and has taken second behind Anderson at both the CIF Southern Section Division 2 final and Masters meet, including a personal-best 41.96 at the latter.

4x100 relay

Favorite: Carson. Despite Saundria Martin and Jaylen Walker stepping in for Kennedi Atkins and Autumn Wright to join Kaelin Roberts and Kenyla Miles from last year’s championship lineup, the Colts haven’t taken a step back, entering the meet with a state-leading 45.90.

Other contenders: Calabasas; Santa Margarita; Bishop O’Dowd. The top two finishers from the CIF Southern Section Masters meet and winner at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions all boast the talent and experience to win if Carson struggles with its exchanges, but the past eight winners have all run under 46 seconds, which neither team has done yet this season.

Sleeper: Serra. If the Cavaliers can get the baton to Jasmin Reed in contention on the anchor, they have an opportunity to secure the championship after finishing second to Carson last year.

4x400 relay

Favorite: Sheldon. Without a senior in its lineup, perhaps the most exciting aspect for the Huskies is the future of this relay, but Tai McDonald, Tatumn LaChapelle, Simone Abdur-Rahim and Thalia Reid are ready to challenge for the championship Saturday following a 3:46.88 at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division 1 finals May 19, second only in the state to Roosevelt’s 3:46.29.

Other contenders: Roosevelt; Santa Margarita; Dana Hills; Carson. If the Colts are in contention to win another team title, they are capable of stepping up again like they did last year to win this relay. The top three CIF Southern Section challengers have all run under 3:48 this year and have the potential to capture a title.

Sleeper: St. Mary’s Berkeley. After winning in 2015 and placing fifth last year, the Panthers boast Avi Wilson-Perteete and Kali Hatcher from both of those lineups and shouldn’t be overlooked if they make the final again.
