Here is an event-by-event breakdown of what to look for in these boys track events Friday and Saturday at the 97th CIF State Championships:

100-meter dash
Favorite: Chaminade's T.J. Brock. The junior star, who has run the fastest time in the country under all conditions with a wind-aided 10.20, could go from a false start in the Mission League prelims last year all the way to a state championship this season, which would be the first by a male track athlete in school history.
Other contenders: Lincoln of Stockton's John McDonald. Has run the second-fastest wind-legal time in the state at 10.50 and has been on an impressive run since taking second to Ian Mack of Green Valley (Nevada) at the Arcadia Invitational.
Sleeper: Amador Valley's JaMaun Charles. Has a victory over John McDonald at the Stanford Invitational and captured the title at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions in 10.71.

200 meters
Favorite: Vista Murrieta's Michael Norman. With a wind-aided 20.39 and wind-legal 20.46 on his resume, it will take an impressive effort by any challenger to knock off Norman, who is undefeated at the distance and already one of the elite performers in state history.
Other contenders: Chaminade's T.J. Brock. His matchup with Norman at the Southern Section Masters meet resulted in a 20.46 to 21.26 setback, but he appears to be the primary challenger and the only other athlete in the field to run under 21 seconds.
Sleepers: Damien's Thaddeus Smith and Zachary Shinnick. After placing third and fifth at the Southern Section Masters meet, expect the teammates to both be in medal contention.

400 meters
Favorite: Vista Murrieta's Michael Norman. Has been motivated the entire season to capture this title after losing by two-hundredths at last year's state final. Boasts the second-fastest time in the country at 45.91 from the Arcadia Invitational.
Other contenders: Long Beach Wilson's Mar'yea Harris. Elevated to the No. 2 time in the state with a 47.21 at the Southern Section Masters meet and should improve on that in the finals.
Sleeper: Chaminade's Greg Campbell. Has run 47.29 to win the Southern Section Division 3 title and will look to rebound from a fourth-place finish at the Masters meet in order to medal.

800 meters
Favorite: Bakersfield Centennial's Isaac Trevino. In a highly competitive field, he enters as the state leader at 1:51.39 after edging Clovis' Connor Morello at the Central Section Masters. Will try to become section's second state champ in the event in three years.
Other contenders: Great Oak's Isaac Cortes and Clovis' Connor Morello. Cortes dropped the 1,600 to focus on the two-lap challenge, where he ranks third in the state at 1:51.44. Morello was also credited with a 1:51.39 at the Central Section Masters, but Trevino was awarded the win.
Sleeper: Los Alamitos' Thomas Heib. Following a 1:51.49 to win the Southern Section Masters meet, Heib made himself a legitimate challenger to not only medal, but win the title.

1,600 meters
Favorite: Brea-Olinda's Austin Tamagno. With Isaac Cortes not among the field, Tamagno -- the state leader at 4:04.59 -- might not encounter much resistance on his way to the title after placing second last season.
Other contenders: Bonita's Dillon Beckum. He battled Tamagno all the way to the end at the Southern Section Division 3 finals and, along with Huntington Beach's George Gleason, has run under 4:10.
Sleeper: Dana Hills' Jake Ogden. Ran two exceptional anchor legs for the Dolphins at the Arcadia Invitational, in addition to clocking 4:08.24 at the Southern Section Division 1 final, making him a dangerous challenger if he's near in the front entering the final lap.

3,200 meters
Favorite: Saugus' Brian Zabilski. The Division 2 state cross country champion ran a state-leading and U.S. No. 5 8:49.38 at the Southern Section Masters meet and is looking to become the first athlete to run faster than 8:50 at the state final since 2008 following a 12th-place finish last year.
Other contenders: Loyola's Robert Brandt and Big Bear's Caleb Webb. Brandt took second to Zabilski in 8:54.56 in the Southern Section Masters meet and has run 8:53.49 at the Arcadia Invitational. Webb clocked 8:52.27 at the Arcadia Invitational and placed 10th in last year's state final.
Sleeper: Madera South's Eduardo "Lalo" Herrera. After doubling in the 1,600 and 3,200 at the Central Section Masters, he has tremendous potential in this event following an 18th-place finish at last year's state final and running 8:55.93 at the Arcadia Invitational.

110-meter hurdles
Favorite: Simi Valley's Alex Billing. The Colorado signee placed third at last year's state final and is the wind-legal state leader at 13.79. He is looking to become only the second Simi Valley male athlete to win a state title in any event.
Other contenders: Upland's Joseph Anderson. Ran the fastest time under all conditions in the state with a wind-aided 13.71 at the Southern Section Division 1 finals. Was edged 13.81 to 13.83 by Billing at the Masters meet.
Sleeper: Carson's Justin Collins. The only other athlete in addition to Anderson and Billing to run under 14 seconds with his 13.95 at the Mt. SAC Relays, expect him to challenge for the title in both hurdles.

300-meter hurdles
Favorite: Carson's Justin Collins. The state leader at 36.76 in the L.A. City Section prelims, Collins is the only athlete in the field to have run faster than 37 seconds. He is trying to become the section's first state winner in this event since 2007.
Other contenders: San Juan Hills' Connor Meech. Won the Southern Section Division 2 title in 37 seconds flat and followed it up by winning the Masters meet in 37.34. Has been looking forward to a rematch with Collins since the Mt. SAC Relays.
Sleeper: Crenshaw's Justin Alexander. Clocked 37.14 at the L.A. City Section prelims and gave Collins a serious challenge in the section final, before placing second.

4 x 100 relay
Favorite: Vista Murrieta. When Michael Norman has been a member of this lineup, the Broncos have been one of the most formidable lineups in state history, including a U.S. No. 2 40.53 at the Southern Section Division 1 finals.
Other contenders: Chaminade. The only other team in the state to run under 41 seconds with a 40.80 at the Arcadia Invitational. The Eagles won the Southern Section Masters meet against a Vista Murrieta lineup that didn't include Michael Norman.
Sleeper: Notre Dame. Placed third at the Southern Section Masters meet and ranks No. 3 in the state this season at 41.34. Won the 2012 state title with Khalfani Muhammad anchoring.

4 x 400 relay
Favorite: Vista Murrieta. As long as Michael Norman is on the anchor, no lead from any opponent will be safe. The Broncos have run U.S. No. 6 3:13.09 and will be motivated to capture their first state title in this event and a potential team championship as well.
Other contenders: Roosevelt. Defeated Vista Murrieta on its way to running 3:14.41 to win the Arcadia Invitational. Despite its fifth-place finish at the Southern Section Masters, expect the Mustangs to be in championship in contention entering the final lap.
Sleeper: Long Beach Wilson. Added itself to the list of challengers following the second-fastest time in the state 3:13.61 to win the Southern Section Masters meet. Mar'yea Harris helps the Bruins pose a significant threat to Roosevelt and Vista Murrieta.
