Here is an event-by-event breakdown of what to look for in the boys field events Friday and Saturday at the 99th CIF State Championships:

High jump

Favorite: Jake Grimsman, Vista del Lago. Although Grimsman didn’t reach last year’s final, he has a 6-10 (2.08m) clearance and has won every competition he’s entered this season, including the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet.

Other contenders: Sean Lee, Trabuco Hills; Earnest Sears, Alemany. Lee and Sears both cleared 7 feet (2.13m) at last year’s state finals, but Mt. Pleasant’s Darius Carbin won the tiebreaker based on fewer misses. Lee cleared 6-11 (2.10m) in his first meet this season and hasn’t duplicated the height since, with Sears boasting a season-best 6-9 (2.05m).

Sleeper: Isaias Hunter, Lathrop. Hunter placed second to Grimsman at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters and has cleared at least 6-6 (1.98m) six times, but will need a personal-best clearance to contend for the championship.

Long jump

Favorite: Sanjay Kettels, St. Mary’s Berkeley. Became only the third individual in the state to surpass 24 feet with his 24-4.25 (7.42m) at the CIF North Coast Section Meet of Champions, producing a six-inch personal best to establish momentum entering the meet. Kettels is looking to follow former St. Mary’s standout Ron Smith, who won the triple jump two years ago.

Other contenders: Matthew DeRoos, Tri-City Christian; Bryan Thompson, Rancho Verde. The other two 24-foot jumpers in the state, both have surpassed that mark in May, giving them the potential to challenge for the championship. DeRoos is the only finalist returning from last year.

Sleeper: Seth Enochs, Yucca Valley. Enochs jumped 23-11.5 (7.30m) in March, but enters the competition with a mark of 22-5 (6.83m) at the CIF Southern Section Masters meet. If he can return to his early season success, Enochs could contend for the title.

Triple jump

Favorite: CJ Stevenson, Great Oak. The only 50-foot performer in the competition, Stevenson is unbeaten this season, with victories at the 50th Arcadia Invitational and 59th Mt. SAC Relays in April. Nick Ponzio boasts Great Oak’s only field event state title, capturing the shot put in 2013.

Other contenders: Arrun Palacio, Dorsey; Jalyn Jackson, Eastlake. Palacio surpassed 48 feet at the L.A. City Section finals and Jackson secured his eighth consecutive victory with a personal best 47-6.5 (14.49m) at the San Diego Section championships, but both athletes will have to get closer to 49 feet to challenge Stevenson.

Sleeper: Tyrese Dedmon, Antelope Valley. Following teammate Morrell Osling’s victory last year, Dedmon knows that all he needs is one significant personal best to capture the title and demonstrated he has the potential following a 47-9.5 (14.56m) performance at the Golden League finals.

Pole vault

Favorite: Tate Curran, Redondo Union. After not advancing past the CIF Southern Section Division 1 prelims last year, Curran has an opportunity to secure another championship for the family, after his uncle Tim (1973) and father Anthony (1977-78) both won titles for Crespi. Curran is also looking at the state meet record of 17-3 (5.25m) set in 2008 by Los Gatos’ Nico Weiler.

Other contenders: Ryan Fegan, Newport Harbor; Michael Magula, Marina. It will take a dip in Curran’s performance and a personal-best effort for either athlete in order to prevail, but both individuals have 16-foot clearances and are waiting for a significant breakthrough at the state meet.

Sleeper: Lance Huber, Del Oro. Produced a big victory in April at the Stanford Invitational and cleared a personal-best 16-1 (4.90m) at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Masters meet, but even another significant improvement could only lift him to second place.

Discus throw

Favorite: Jonah Wilson, Clovis. Wilson set the state record April 28 with his 221-5 (67.48m) at the Battle of Central Cal, but has only produced a throw beyond 200 feet once since. Clovis has never captured a boys state championship, so there will be plenty of motivation for the Washington-bound senior, who finished sixth last year.

Other contenders: Robbie Otal, Oak Park; Jeffery Williams, Clayton Valley. The other two 200-foot throwers in the field, they were both part of an exceptional competition at the 50th Arcadia Invitational that saw four athletes surpass the mark. Otal returns after placing eighth in last season’s final.

Sleeper: Jacob Wilson, Buchanan. Although he is a stronger contender in the shot put, Wilson has a personal-best 195-1 (59.46m) and has the potential to upstage his cousin and the other challengers.

Shot put

Favorite: Jacob Wilson, Buchanan. The No. 2 all-time performer in the CIF Central Section at 66-5.5 (20.25m), Wilson is looking to become only the second Buchanan male athlete to win a state championship. The UCLA signee has not lost a competition in his home shot put ring this year.

Other contenders: Jonah Wilson, Clovis; Kyle Tsu, Marina. Along with Jacob Wilson, these are the only two other athletes to have reached at least 63 feet this season. Jonah Wilson is looking for redemption after fouling all three attempts in last year’s final.

Sleeper: Daniel Viveros, Bakersfield Liberty. Viveros could help the CIF Central Section produce a sweep of the top three spots if he can improve on his personal-best 61-7 (18.77m).
