Here are 10 storylines to keep an eye on Friday and Saturday at the 99th CIF State Championships:

Triple jump could stand in the way of Tara’s trifecta

After winning the girls 100-meter hurdles and triple jump championships last year, the only obstacle that stood in between Agoura star Tara Davis and a potential three state gold medals was a fifth-round long jump by Clovis North’s Rhesa Foster.

Davis finished second overall in the team competition last season with 28 points by herself, but she enters her final state meet with even more motivation to join Thousand Oaks’ Marion Jones, Woodside’s Wendy Brown, Chino’s Angela Williams, Mt. Pleasant’s Vashti Thomas and Clovis’ Jenna Prandini as the only female athletes to win three individual titles in one state final.

With Davis boasting wind-legal national-leading marks of 13.01 in the 100 hurdles and 21 feet, 8.75 inches in the long jump – along with wind-aided efforts of 12.89 and 22-3.75 – the biggest challenge this year for the Georgia signee could be in the triple jump.

The past two North Coast Section winners Kali Hatcher of St. Mary’s Berkeley and Allanah Lee of Castro Valley, along with Central Coast Section champion Arianna Fisher of Silver Creek, have the potential to upstage Davis in the last of the three events on her schedule. Davis has a personal-best 43-2 from last year, but Hatcher is the state leader this season at 42-3.

Teare tries to track down Fernandez

Since Riverbank’s German Fernandez set the state meet record by running 8:34.23 in the 3,200 in 2008, no California athlete has run faster than 8:47.30 at the final, when Big Bear’s Caleb Webb captured the title in 2015.

St. Joseph Notre Dame senior Cooper Teare won the 50th Arcadia Invitational by clocking 8:41.46, the No. 4 time in state history and the fastest by any California performer since Fernandez.

Teare, who edged Great Oak’s Cole Spencer 8:51.845 to 8:51.847 to capture last year’s title, is the only athlete in state history to rank in the top five in the 1,600/mile, 3,200 and 5,000.

The last male runner to repeat in the 3,200 is Royal’s Michael Cybulski in 2005-06. Teare is looking to become the seventh competitor in state history to win multiple boys 3,200 titles.

Raising the bar could lead to all-time record

Anaheim Canyon senior Rachel Baxter improved on her own state girls pole vault record by clearing 14-4 (4.36m) at the CIF Southern Section Masters meet, the fourth-highest outdoor clearance in prep history.

Baxter is looking to become the third female athlete to capture back-to-back state titles, following Westview’s Kortney Ross in 2009-10 and Castilleja’s Tori Anthony in 2006-07.

After clearing a state meet record 14-2 (4.31m) last year, Baxter will now look to elevate above the national high school record 14-7.50 (4.45m) set by Lexi Weeks of Cabot (Ark.) in 2015. Only Weeks and Desiree Freier of Justin Northwest (Texas) – teammates at Arkansas – have vaulted higher as prep athletes than Baxter.

King Joe attempts to extend his reign

Upland senior Joseph Anderson has the potential to become the eighth male athlete in state history to repeat as champion in the 110-meter hurdles, including the first since Agoura’s Johnathan Cabral in 2010-11.

Anderson could also add to his legacy by becoming the sixth individual to sweep both 110 and 300 hurdles championships after finishing fifth in the latter last year. Cabral was the last to achieve the impressive double in 2011.

James Logan’s Kevin Craddock and Cabral are the only two male competitors to repeat in the 110 hurdles and sweep both championships in the same year. De La Salle’s Marquis Morris and Serra’s Lloyd Sicard won both hurdles titles since Cabral achieved the feat, but not in the same season.

Shae seeks significant double

Not only is Norco senior Shae Anderson attempting to win her first two state titles, but pursuing a double that has never been accomplished in the same year at the championship meet.

Anderson is competing in the 300 hurdles and 400, preparing for showdowns against the defending state champions in both events. Carson senior Kaelin Roberts has won the 400 twice in her career, the first time during her freshman season at Long Beach Poly in 2014.

Vacaville senior Jurnee Woodward won the 300 hurdles last year and is attempting to become the first female to repeat in the event since Claremont’s Kori Carter won three in a row in 2008-10.

Anderson has already prevailed in head-to-head showdowns with both Roberts and Woodward this year.

Leslie Maxie of Mills captured both the 300 hurdles and 400 titles during her career, but in different years. Maxie won the 400 in 1983, then captured the 300 hurdles in 1984-85.

Hometown heroes pursuing throwing sweep

Not since 2010 has the Central Section secured a state championship in either the boys shot put and discus throw, but that drought could end with a potential double from cousins Jacob Wilson of Buchanan and Jonah Wilson of Clovis.

Jonah Wilson set the state discus record April 28 by throwing 221-5 (67.48m) at the Battle of Central Cal and Jacob Wilson is the state leader in the shot put at 66-5.5 (20.25m).

The Central Section swept the boys discus and shot put titles from 2008-10. Buchanan has never won a state throwing crown, with Kyle Alcorn the Bears’ only boys champion in the 3,200 in 2002.

Clovis has produced girls champions in Janet Yarborough (1979), Latrice Johnson (1985) and Jenna Prandini (2010-11), but has never secured a boys state title.

High drama could unfold in high jump

Oaks Christian senior Cassidy Palka needed a jumpoff last year to win the state girls high jump title at 5-9 (1.75m) and the USC commit might have to deliver similar heroics in order to become the first champion to repeat since Costa Mesa’s Sharon Day-Monroe in 2002-03.

Palka has only cleared 5-8 (1.72m) this year, with Bakersfield Stockdale’s Iesha Hamm and San Lorenzo Valley’s Cassie Ackemann both having 5-10 clearances (1.77m), in addition to Sanger junior Chineyne Agina and Fortuna sophomore Katie Hurst both clearing 5-9.

Palka is looking to become only the fifth female athlete to repeat in the girls high jump, all of which represent the Southern Section. She is also attempting to become the first Oaks Christian athlete to secure back-to-back titles.

Curran looks to add to family legacy

Redondo Union senior Tate Curran has a tough act to follow in the pole vault, with uncle Tim (1973) and father Anthony (1977-78) both winning state titles for Crespi.

But Curran could end up ascending to a level above both of them, looking to challenge the state meet record of 17-3 (5.25m) set in 2008 by Los Gatos’ Nico Weiler. It would complete an incredible turnaround for Curran, who didn’t advance past the CIF Southern Section Division 1 prelims last year.

Curran cleared 17-3 at the Division 1 prelims May 13, which ranks No. 10 in state history. He is still chasing the best high school mark by a family member, which belongs to his father, as Anthony Curran cleared 17-4.25 (5.28m) in 1978, the No. 7 clearance in state history.

Sprint record could command spotlight

The boys 100-meter dash state meet record of 10.30 belonging to San Diego Southwest’s Riley Washington has stood since 1992, but multiple athletes have the potential to take aim at the historic mark.

Rancho Verde’s Isaiah Cunningham has run a wind-legal 10.32 and Vista Murrieta’s Javelin Guidry has clocked a wind-legal 10.34.

Among the boys and girls track records at the state meet, only the 1989 Hawthorne boys 4x100 relay mark has stood longer than Washington’s memorable 100 performance.

Carson trying to complete another championship run

The only girls teams to repeat as champions in state history are Berkeley, JW North and Long Beach Poly.

Carson, which became the fifth L.A. City Section team to capture a girls championship, has the potential to become the section’s only repeat winner and the first program in any section to achieve the feat since Long Beach Poly in 2013-14.

Rancho Verde is not only seeking its first team title, but could set the all-time boys scoring record. Only four boys teams have scored more than 50 points in capturing a title, with Berkeley setting the record with 58 in 1981.

Vista Murrieta was the most recent team to surpass 50 points, repeating as boys champions with 54 last year.
