Here are 10 storylines to keep an eye on Friday and Saturday at the 98th CIF State Championships:

The magic of Michael

With the possibility of winning four events and contributing to another boys team title, all eyes will be on Vista Murrieta senior Michael Norman every time he takes the track, anticipating a run at the record books on his journey to the U.S. Olympic Trials. Norman set state meet records last year in the 200 and 400 to help the Broncos capture their first team championship. He lowered his own 200 state record to 20.23 at the Southern Section Masters Meet and is pursuing the 400 state mark of 45.09 set in 1985 by Hawthorne’s Henry Thomas. Norman will also be instrumental in Vista Murrieta contending for 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay state championships, looking to equal the feat of Long Beach Poly’s Bryshon Nellum by capturing all four gold medals in one state final.

Tara’s potential triple could secure title

Agoura junior Tara Davis is not only seeking her first state gold medal, but is looking to join Thousand Oaks’ Marion Jones, Woodside’s Wendy Brown, Clovis’ Jenna Prandini, Chino’s Angela Williams and Mt. Pleasant’s Vashti Thomas as the only female athletes to win three individual state titles in the same year. Her potential triple of the long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles has never been accomplished before at the state level and it could put Davis in position to also contend for the team championship by herself. Davis is a strong favorite in the long jump and triple jump, events in which she placed in the top three at last year’s finals, but her biggest challenge will come in the 100 hurdles following a third-place finish last season. Davis’ 20 points finished seventh last year, but a potential 30 points this season could be enough to outlast all other challengers.

Prince of Flight ready to soar

Oakmont senior Isaiah Holmes didn’t qualify for a state final in any of the three jumping events last season, but this year the Sac-Joaquin Section star is a legitimate threat to challenge for all three championships, in addition to possibly making the 110 hurdles final. Holmes produced an impressive triple of 25-11.5 in the long jump, 7-1 in the high jump and 47-11.5 in the triple jump at the Sac-Joaquin Masters, along with taking runner-up with a 14.13 in the 110 hurdles. The last male athlete to win three individual titles in the same state final was Muir’s Jerry Proctor in 1967 and only four male competitors have achieved the feat in state history. Holmes’ performance in all four events could be enough to secure a team plaque with a top-three finish.

Carson’s return to late night

Highlighted by a potential 4x100 relay showdown with South Bay rival Serra, the Carson girls are looking to contend for their first state team championship two years after capturing the program’s first individual title -- Ashley Anderson in the triple jump -- and one season after not scoring a point at the state finals. The Colts’ chances improved significantly with the arrival of Long Beach Poly transfers Kaelin Roberts, Kenyla Miles, Kennedi Atkins and Autumn Wright, but the depth of jumpers Jonon Young, Crystal Washington and Jaylen Walker could provide Carson the necessary support to prevail in a competitive team battle. Carson is looking to become the fifth L.A. City Section girls program to win the team title, including the first since Kennedy in 1980.

Bruckner’s bid for history

San Jose Valley Christian senior Elena Bruckner is not only trying to become the fifth female athlete to win state titles in the shot put and discus throw in the same year, but also trying set state records in both in the process. Bruckner’s best performances both exceed the state meet records, but she has her sights on the all-time state mark of 190-3 in the discus set by Shafter's Anna Jelmini in 2009 and improving on her own standard of 54-7 in the shot put from the West Catholic Athletic League finals. Bruckner remains the national leader in the discus at 186-10, but was recently surpassed in the shot put by Alyssa Wilson of New Jersey, who became only the second prep female athlete to surpass 55 feet with a mark of 55-1.25. Jelmini set state meet records of 53-8 in the shot put and 186-9 in the discus in 2009.

Distance double play

Great Oak has seniors Destiny Collins, Isaac Cortes and Spencer Dodds all pursuing multiple state titles, with several talented challengers standing in their way. Collins, last year’s 3200 winner, is still seeking her first 1600 championship, but will be tested by national leader and defending champ Amanda Gehrich of Tesoro, who is also entered in the 1600 and 3200. A rematch with senior Fiona O’Keeffe of Davis Senior, last year’s runner-up, also awaits Collins in the 3200. Cortes, pursuing his first individual title, is expected to compete in the 800 and 1600. He’ll battle San Clemente’s Connor Dunne in the 800 and could face the biggest challenges in the 1600 from Dodds and Madera South’s Eduardo “Lalo” Herrera, both of which are competing in the 1600 and 3200.

Sprinting into spectacular territory

In addition to Norman, Chaminade’s TJ Brock along with Rio Mesa’s Zaria Francis and Oaks Christian’s Lauren Rain Williams are all pursuing state meet sprinting records. Brock, who won the title last year in a wind-legal 10.34 seconds, is looking to break the 100-meter dash mark of 10.30 set in 1992 by Southwest’s Riley Washington. Francis and Williams both have the potential to chase the girls 100 state meet record of 11.14 set by Thousand Oaks’ Marion Jones in 1992. Williams, who already has a wind-aided mark of 22.44 in the 200, will be aiming for the 200 state meet record of 22.52 set by Allyson Felix in 2003.

Records being taken to new heights

Both state meet records in the pole vault could be in jeopardy, especially in the girls competition with Anaheim Canyon junior Rachel Baxter already setting the state standard twice this season, including a 14-3 clearance at the Orange County Championships. Castilleja’s Tori Anthony set the state meet record of 14-1 in 2007 and remains No. 2 in state history behind Baxter and just ahead of Pacific Collegiate senior Erika Malaspina, who has cleared 13-9 and is looking to cap her career with a 14-foot clearance. Marina senior Jett Gordon, who set the Southern Section Division 2 record with a 17-2 clearance, could challenge the boys state meet record of 17-3 set by Los Gatos’ Nico Weiler in 2008.

Hurdling Highlights

After Roosevelt’s Jasmyne Graham swept state titles in both girls hurdling events last year, Vacaville’s Jurnee Woodward is a contender to achieve the feat this season, which would make her the 10th female athlete in state history to capture both championships in the same year. Woodward is a strong favorite in the 300 hurdles, looking to become the 14th female athlete in state history to eclipse 41 seconds. She’ll have plenty of challengers in the 100 hurdles, including 2014 state champion Mecca McGlaston of Dublin, along with El Cerrito’s Kaylah Robinson, Agoura’s Tara Davis and Bishop O’Dowd’s Kara Awakoaiye. An exciting rubber match in the boys 110 hurdles could develop with La Quinta’s Koty Burton and Upland’s Joseph Anderson. Burton won the Southern Section Masters Meet after Anderson prevailed at the Division 1 final, with both athletes also entered in the 300 hurdles. Agoura’s Johnathan Cabral was the last male athlete to sweep both hurdling titles in 2011.

Hometown Heroes

Buchanan’s Hannah Waller will try to defend the girls 400 state title on her home track, with Paramveer Chohan (300 hurdles) and Jacob Wilson (discus throw) looking to become only the second male athlete for the Bears to win an individual championship. Kyle Alcorn was Buchanan’s first state champion, winning the 3200 in 2002. Madera South’s Eduardo “Lalo” Herrera is looking to capture the program’s first state title in either the 1600 or 3200, with Clovis North’s Rhesa Foster contending for the girls long jump championship and Clovis’ Alexis Vincent-Walker seeking the girls high jump crown.
