Here is an event-by-event breakdown of what to look for in these girls field competitions Friday and Saturday at the 97th CIF State Championships:

Long Jump
Favorite: Harvard-Westlake's Courtney Corrin. The national leader with a wind-legal 20-11 and the 2013 state champion, she is looking to win another after Margaux Jones beat her on the final jump last year.
Other contenders: Agoura's Tara Davis. Only lost to Corrin by 1/4 inch at the Southern Section Masters and has a wind-legal best of 20-6, making her a legitimate threat following a third-place finish at state last year.
Sleeper: Redlands' Margaux Jones. Delivered one of the most dramatic moments in state finals history by winning on her final attempt, but will need to equal or surpass her personal-best 20-9 in order to have a chance to defend her title.

Triple Jump
Favorite: Agoura's Tara Davis. The only sophomore in state history with a 20-foot long jump and 41-foot triple jump, this event is the best opportunity for Davis to capture her first state title.
Other contenders: Castro Valley's Kennedy Jones. Produced a personal best with her wind-legal 40-9 effort at North Coast Meet of Champions and is looking to become the second Castro Valley athlete in three years to win a title, following Sasha Wallace in 2013.
Sleeper: Carondelet's Christina Chenault. Along with Great Oak's Ciynamon Stevenson, has surpassed 40 feet and is capable of challenging for the title, but is competing in multiple events and will need to maximize her jumps.

High Jump
Favorite: Buena's Erinn Beattie. The state leader has cleared 5-10 and captured the Southern Section Masters title. Beattie is looking to improve on last year's fifth-place finish when she cleared only 5-6.
Other contenders: Upland's Skyler Daniel. Has cleared 5-9 this season and matched Beattie's 5-7 clearance at the Southern Section Masters meet. Daniel placed fourth at last year's state final by clearing 5-8.
Sleeper: Harvard-Westlake's Alexandria Florent. After multiple runner-up finishes and having 5-10 every year in her high school career, the Wake Forest signee is again in the hunt for the title and could finally deliver.

Pole Vault
Favorite: Santa Margarita's Kaitlyn Merritt. The 2013 state champion has plenty of motivation after not advancing to last year's final. Merritt equaled her state-leading 13-7 clearance at the Southern Section Masters meet and is looking to become the first female to clear 14 feet at the state final since Tori Anthony in 2007.
Other contenders: Anaheim Canyon's Rachel Baxter. The sophomore is the only individual to defeat Kaitlyn Merritt in the regular season at the Orange County Championships. She cleared 13-1 at the Southern Section Masters meet and is looking to eclipse her PR of 13-3.
Sleeper: Pacific Collegiate's Erika Malaspina. One of the most improved vaulters in the state, she placed sixth in last year's final by clearing 11-10, but has a personal-best this season of 13-2.

Shot Put
Favorite: San Jose Valley Christian's Elena Bruckner. The junior star became the No. 5 performer in state history and eighth all-time in the U.S. with her 53-5 1/2 at the Central Coast Section finals. Bruckner had several marks beyond 50 feet, a distance no other competitor in the state has reached.
Other contenders: Notre Dame's Nia Britt. Has a lifetime best exceeding 49 feet, but the Iowa signee will likely need to surpass 50 feet to put herself in championship contention.
Sleeper: Mt. Miguel's Laulauga Tausaga. Produced a personal-best 48-3 1/2 at the San Diego Section finals to place herself in medal contention.

Discus Throw
Favorite: San Jose Valley Christian's Elena Bruckner. Despite her 141-11 at the Central Coast Section finals, Bruckner is still the national leader at 182-8, which is 18 feet ahead of any other competitor in the field.
Other contenders: San Jose Valley Christian's Ronna Stone. After defeating Bruckner at the Central Coast Section finals with her 155-7 effort, the Oregon signee could put Valley Christian in position to sweep the top two spots.
Sleeper: Newbury Park's Kendall Mader. The former state and national leader at 164-4, Mader won the Southern Section Masters meet with a 155-3 performance and will likely need to exceed her personal best to challenge for the championship.
