CLOVIS — It was hot like August on the first Saturday in June in the sultry Central Valley.

And we're not talking about the sometimes sweltering month of summer.

We're talking about Tam High junior August Kiles, who was every bit as hot as the 100-degree weather Saturday during the state meet finals at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Kiles notched not one, but two personal records in the state meet pole vault finals and finished second with a 16-foot, 4-inch jump, the same height cleared by state champ Luigi Colella.

Colella, a junior from Thousand Oaks, won the event on fewer misses.
