Payton Smith, a senior at La Jolla High, won the girls 400-meter title in 53.39 seconds at the CIF State Championships at Buchanan High's Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. Smith also earned eighth place in the 200-meter final in a wind-legal 24.23 seconds. Smith became the first female athlete from La Jolla to win a state title in any track and field event since 1974.
