CHULA VISTA — Carina Gillespie is ready to break out of the rut.

Oh, don’t get her wrong, like any high school track athlete, the Otay Ranch senior is happy to have participated in the California State High School Track and Field Championships every year since she was a freshman.

Very few runners are that consistent or that good.

The trouble is Gillespie has made that six-hour drive to Clovis ready to bust out and qualify for the 800-meter championships on Saturday only to fall short. In baseball parlance, she’s 0-for-3.
