Sydnie Vanek, an Arizona-bound senior at Clovis High and the reigning California state girls long jump champion and the national leader this season at 20-7.50 (6.28m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her victories at West Coast Relays and the Arcadia Invitational along with her competition April 21 at the Oregon Relays Presented by AthleticNET at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Vanek shares how meaningful the opportunity is to compete at the event this season after missing the chance to compete last season after being sidelined for five weeks in March and April with a foot injury. She also explains how significant it is to jump at the renovated Hayward Field, after attending a volleyball camp during construction for the new stadium and finally having the ability to attend the completed version of the facility in person. Vanek also shares how it was her dream as a younger athlete to attend Oregon to compete in track and field, before she developed a greater passion for volleyball in recent years. She also speaks about how excited the entire Clovis program was watching the video of the boys distance medley relay winning last year at Oregon Relays, as well as Christopher Caudillo prevailing in the boys mile. Vanek analyzes how special it is to follow the legacy at Clovis High of Jenna Prandini and to now have the opportunity to jump at Hayward Field, just like the Ducks' all-time great did in the past. She examines the pursuit of a 21-foot jump and how she wished there was an opportunity to compete against Oregon state record holder Sophia Beckmon of Oregon City, who is not scheduled to attend the meet. Vanek also discusses how valuable it has been to collaborate with jumps coach Greg Friesen, along with having the support of Clovis coach Ephion Jackson and her family. She talks about the balance of competing in track and field, as well as club volleyball, throughout the spring, and how important recovery has been following long weekends of activity, as well as travel. Vanek shares why Arizona was the right fit for her to verbally commit to play volleyball as a junior, and her excitement for competing in both sports in college, along with how much playing basketball and volleyball have contributed to her sprinting and jumping in track and field, and how all three sports allow Vanek to express her personality.
